The position is newly established within the framework of the Cancer Research Center Cologne Essen (CCCE), in which the University Hospital Essen and the University Hospital Cologne join forces to advance translational cancer research and computational cancer biology. Generous funding is provided by the state of Nordrhein-Westfalen for 5 years; following successful development of the CCCE perpetuation of the professorship is envisioned.

The holder of this position will contribute to research and teaching in Medical Data Science at the Medical Faculty and University Hospital Essen. She or he will interact within the framework of the West German Cancer Center (WTZ), a leading comprehensive cancer center designated as Oncology Center of Excellence by the German Cancer Aid. As partner site of the federally funded German Cancer Consortium (DKTK), formed by seven excellent university medical centers and the German Cancer Research Center Heidelberg (DKFZ), the West German Cancer Center offers a highly competitive and stimulating scientific environment including access to core facilities, biobanks and datasets from large patient cohorts.

The future chair should be an internationally acknowledged scientist with broad, outstanding expertise in informatics, particularly in the fields of bioinformatics, biostatistics or medical informatics. The future chair is expected to lead the development and application of novel technologies to retrieve, integrate and mine multimodal datasets originating from clinical care and translational research. New algorithms and bioinformatics pipelines shall be developed that will ultimately feed into direct improvements of patient care in oncology. The future chair will also contribute to the main research focuses of the Medical Faculty and will collaborate with and contribute to ongoing and evolving research consortia. Furthermore, the future chair will possess dedicated teaching skills and use innovative methods in teaching.

Qualifications according to § 36 Hochschulgesetz NRW are required. Internationally visible publications in the field and successful experience with competitive third-party funding applications are mandatory. Involvement in teaching activities of the university with emphasis on postgraduate education is mandatory. Concepts on the participation in teaching activities with regard to the profile of the Medical Faculty of the University of Duisburg-Essen should be provided.

The Medical Faculty in Essen promotes research particularly in the following areas: Cardiovascular Disease, Oncology, Transplantation Medicine and Translational Neuro- and Behavior Sciences, as well as the bridging disciplines of Immunology and Infectious Diseases. This position is dedicated to the area of Oncology.

We have an exciting opportunity for an intern to work with us here at the "Plant Breeding and Genetics Lab" of the FAO/IAEA joint Division in Seibersdorf/Vienna, Austria.  "Functional Crop Genomics" describes best what we do. By assisting in Data Analysis, the intern will directly contribute to addressing plant breeding challenges in the developing world and hence help to improve food security. The internship is paid and, with a  duration of (up to) 12 months.

Plant Breeding is becoming mostly a digital enterprise. Our main mandate is to develop protocols for broad community use. For this internship we are accepting applications from students and recent graduates with solid skills in computer programming, python scripting, and repository management with github. The intern will join a strong interdisciplinary team of experts in plant breeding, plant tissue culture, molecular biology, and (bio)informatics. A large part of the work will be adapting and developing reproducible computation workflows for current and future R&D. (Our current workflows are mostly in snakemake). If inclined we also have machine learning problems, mostly related to clever analysis of 3rd generation DNA sequencing data.
The intern will get the opportunity for collaborative work in an international environment with staff and fellows from around the world who work on a large variety of traits and crops ranging from banana and coffee to Sorghum, and Yam. There is considerable amount of data to analyse with ample opportunities to contribute to scientific publications.

To drive the newly funded research effort “Data integration, Analytics and Services in ProteomicsDB” (DIAS) jointly run between the chairs of Proteomics and Bioanalytics, Bio-informatics, Information Systems and the University Medical School, we are looking to fill five positions for PostDocs and PhD students in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology with a strong background or interest in bioinformatics, database design, data visualization, machine learning and their application in biomedical research. The successful candidates will be key members of a strong interdisciplinary team focused on the development and application of proteomic and genomic approaches to cellular signaling, chemical biology and biomarker discovery in the areas of cancer research and personalized medicine. Five research topics are available which focus on: i) Service engineering in life science research, ii) Data services for mass spectrometry-based proteomics, iii) Integration and analytics of drug effect data, iv) Integration and analytics of protein structure data and v) Support decision making in molecular tumor boards.
You will collaborate with colleagues at the European Bioinformatics Institute (PRIDE, ChEMBL and Uniprot), Cellzome (a GSK company) and ThermoFisher Scientific. The project goals are: i) to provide FAIR access to research data, data analytics and data services in ProteomicsDB to the world-wide scientific community; ii) to demonstrate that the integrated analysis of hetero-geneous data modalities leads to new models providing insight into complex biological rela-tionships; iii) to demonstrate that molecular, drug and phenotypic data and data services in ProteomicsDB can be translated to aid clinical decision making.
Requirements: candidates should hold a degree in Bioinformatics, Informatics or a related discipline. Extensive theoretical knowledge of and practical skills in statistical analysis, rela-tional database technology, programming and scripting are essential. Additional desirable skills include a sound understanding of proteomic and genomic technologies and data as well as basic biological and (bio) chemical concepts. We are looking for self-motivated and broadly interested individuals with high potential. Flexibility and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment on multiple scientific and infrastructure projects focused on innovative ideas are essential. About Team BMP (Brain Microcircuits in Psychiatric Diseases)

The main aim of the team, headed by Dr. Michal Slezak, is to understand biological correlates of phenotypes related to human psychiatric diseases. Using advanced behavioural, genetic and physiological approaches combined with computational methods we identify genes underlying glial dysfunction and we use this knowledge to rescue disease-related phenotypes.

The position

We are offering a senior postdoctoral position for an enthusiastic researcher to broaden our think-tank. The ideal candidate has a PhD in bioinformatics, a proven track record evidenced by prior publications and is capable of independent thinking. The main responsibilities include:

  • Statistical analysis of data obtained from cell type- and brain-region-specific gene expression data from rodent models and 
    human brain samples, as well as cell cultures differentiated from patient-specific induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC)
  • Integration of data from these distinct models with public databases, to validate original findings in the context of the cell type, brain region and disease (e.g. GSEA)
  • Pathway analysis to conclude genetic networks and signaling pathways affected by a disease state or targeted genetic manipulation (e.g. IPA)
  • Contribution to the design of experimental strategies to translate the results of transcriptional surveys to phenotypic studies
  • Collaboration with bioinformatics experts of the industry partner, Boehringer Ingelheim
  • Monitoring the field of psychiatric research for novel methods and pathways of interest

Required skills

  • PhD in the area of bioinformatics, computational biology, systems biology or similar
  • Knowledge in statistical methods in the context of biological systems
  • Prior experience with RNAseq analysis
  • Advanced programming skills in R and/or Python
  • Independent and creative thinking
  • Very good work organization skills
  • Experience to work in interdisciplinary teams

At the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg, Germany’s largest biomedical research institute, computational scientists work at the forefront of cancer research. Main activities at the DKFZ involving big data:
