For over 200 years the Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung (SGN) represents one of the most relevant institutions investigating nature and its diversity. Currently, scientists from more than 40 countries across 11 locations in Germany conduct research in the fields of biodiversity, earth system analysis and climate change.  Research Associate (m/f/d)

 at the earliest possible date.


 The Specialized Information Service Biodiversity Research is an interdisciplinary project to mobilize biodiversity data in historical and contemporary scientific publications, especially German literature. Your main task is the extension of existing thesauri and the design of ontologies on the morphology, ecology and systematics of soil fauna (particularly soil arthropods) on the basis of the data warehouse Edaphobase and in cooperation with our staff members in Görlitz. You will also be involved in the development of ontologies for describing plant-pollinator interactions. In addition to evaluating and consolidating text mining technologies, you will analyse and publish data in scientific journals together with the project partners. You are also expected to participate regularly in national and international conferences of relevant professional societies to present the project results.




The project is carried out in collaboration with the University Library Johann Christian Senckenberg (focus on digitization), the Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung (focus on ontology design) and the Text Technology Lab (focus on text mining tools) at the Institute of Informatics of the Goethe University of Frankfurt.




Your profile:


·         Successfully completed university studies, ideally a doctoral degree in biology, bioinformatics or a related field with a specialization in ecology/soil zoology


·         research experience in interdisciplinary working environments and ideally relevant experience with biodiversity data bases


·         Demonstrable pertinent scientific publications


·         Knowledge of basic data standards for biodiversity data (e.g. Darwin Core/DwC, Access to Biological Collections Data/ABCD)


·         Experience in the analysis of ecological data or biodiversity data, respectively, and ideally with inter- and transdisciplinary project work


·         Experience in database query (SQL) and the use of programming interfaces (APIs)


·         Good programming skills [e.g., Java, Python] and, preferably software skills for the development of ontologies (e.g., Protégé)


·         Confident oral and written communication skills in German and English


·         Excellent abilities in team work and communication as well as self-reliant service- and target-oriented operation

Salary and benefits are according to a full-time public service position in Germany (TV-H E 13, 100%). The contract should start as soon as possible and will initially be limited for 17 months.
