A PhD Candidate in Structural Bioinformatics/Computer-Aided Drug Design

The in silico toxicology and structural bioinformatics group (AG Volkamer) at the Institute of Physiology, Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, is searching for a PhD candidate starting as soon as possible (1.2.2018). We are a young, energetic and interdisciplinary research group with focus on development of structure-based methods for computer-aided drug design and risk assessment. We are especially interested in the computer-aided prediction of on- and off-target effects considering ligand- and structure-based structural and physicochemical properties. The developed methods are applied for rational design of more selective and less toxic substances, especially in the context of cancer research.

Research topic
How to probe and validate a potential pathway or target remains one of the key questions in basic research in life sciences. Often these investigations lack suitable chemical tool compounds for the elucidation of the function of a specific protein. We aim to provide a novel computational workbench to help the identification of such tool compounds. In this context, we offer a 3-year DFG-funded PhD position working on an exciting computer-aided drug design project with focus on binding site similarity using the ever-growing amount of available protein structures.

The PhD candidate has (or will receive in the near future) a master’s degree in life sciences, e.g., bioinformatics, (bio)pharmaceutical and computer sciences, or equivalent with excellent scientific degree. The candidate should have good multidisciplinary team working and communication skills. Affinity with computational sciences (especially programming skills) and structural bioinformatics, experience with UNIX/Linux operating systems, databases as well as web design are advantageous benefits.
