Das Institut für Experimentelle Medizin (IEM) umfasst insgesamt sieben Arbeitsgruppen, die sich durch ihr gemeinsames Interesse an der Entzündungsforschung auszeichnen: Systematische Proteomics und Bioanalytik, Inflammatorische Karzinogenese, Molekulare Entzündungsmedizin, Medizinethik, Maritime Medizin, Asthmaforschung und Medizinische Systembiologie. Das IEM wird von einem Direktorium geführt, welches sich aus den Arbeitsgruppenleitern zusammensetzt. Die leitenden Professoren und Professorinnen sind überwiegend Mitglieder des Exzellenzclusters "Entzündungen an Grenzflächen". Das Institut wurde im Jahr 2009 an der Medizinischen Fakultät der Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel gegründet.
