Das Max-Planck-Institut für Informatik widmet sich der Forschung in der Computertechnologie und legt dabei einen besonderen Schwerpunkt auf Algorithmen und ihre Anwendungen im weitesten Sinn. Das Interesse reicht von der Grundlagenforschung (Algorithmen und Komplexität, Logik der Programmierung) bis zu einer Reihe von Anwendungsbereichen (Computergraphik, Geometric Computation, Constraint Solving, Programmverifikation, Datenbanken und Informationssysteme, Bioinformatik). Im Bereich der Bioinformatik widmet sich das Max-Planck-Institut schwerpunktmässig Forschung in den Bereichen: Genomik und Epigenomik, Proteinstrukturen und -Interaktionen sowie Bioinformatik zur Analyse von Krankheiten. Bei den Krankheiten stehen Krebs und virale Infektionen, insbesondere virale Resistenzanalyse, im Vordergrund. Neben Grundlagenforschung wird auch translationale Forschung betrieben. Das Institut bietet mehrere Softwaresysteme  und Server frei zur Nutzung in der biomedizinischen Forschung und im Gesundheitsbereich an.
